In the summer of 2024, an unexpected email message startled me. One of my interviewees, a fervent opponent of Putin’s ruthless invasion of a sovereign nation, announced his intent to volunteer in Ukraine. He viewed this perilous journey as a chance to strike back against tyranny, urging me to join him in amplifying the voices of those caught in the storm. I dismissed the notion for two fleeting days, but then clarity enveloped my mind like a bolt from the blue.
What if I ventured to Ukraine in 2026, when, with any fortune, the war might be a haunting memory or at least the aggression quelled? What if I could weave together the harrowing tales of lives upended by a foreign tyrant? What if I could capture their stories in striking images, creating a pictorial narrative that resonates with the world? What if I enlisted a local film crew to breathe life into a documentary, illuminating the struggles and resilience of a beleaguered people? The possibilities surged through my mind.
Once I breached that mental Rubicon, I realized there would be no turning back. I reached out to a former classmate, a master storyteller who wields her camera like a pen, crafting profound narratives from the lives of those she encounters. Her enthusiasm for my vision was palpable, though she wisely noted it hinged on the evolving situation of the conflict.
The concept of a word and photo anthology emerged as a powerful vessel to convey the plight of an invaded nation, a tapestry woven with the threads of humanity’s endurance. Support began to pour in, including a former colleague who holds close ties to Ukraine—and even, vicariously, to Volodymyr Zelensky himself.
An adventure looms on the horizon, a journey destined to reveal the indomitable spirit of those who refuse to be silenced!
